There is no more “essential business” than a food bank - especially during a major disaster. Doug Pick, the CEO of Feed More, will speak to Encorepreneur! on Tuesday, August 25th on the enormous short and long term challenges of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Doug will share the extraordinary steps that Feed More has taken to meet its immediate needs, and how it is trying to plan for an uncertain new future in the wake of the pandemic.
As a senior executive at Capital One, Doug was responsible for disaster planning. When he joined Feed More 8 years ago, he didn’t know how valuable that experience would eventually become.
In March the COVID-19 pandemic hit with all the force, if not the speed, of a hurricane. Feed More’s suppliers, distributors and human resources were completely disrupted. But, unlike many businesses, the demand for its services became even bigger and more critical. The 50 year old Richmond-based organization provided more than 24 million meals for nearly 200,000 central Virginia residents during 2019. This year that number may increase by 35%.
Feed More was founded more than 50 years ago as “Meals on Wheels” serving just eight clients. Today, it is a complex organization with many programs provided by nearly 100 employees who are supported by 200 volunteers each day. It works with 300 non-profit partner agencies to distribute healthy meals to 200,000 residents in 34 cities and counties in Central Virginia.
