The star of the February Encorepreneur Breakfast will be the greatest athlete in Virginia’s history and one of the greatest racehorses of all time – Secretariat. Known as “Big Red”, Secretariat became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and still holds the record time for all three Triple Crown races. His 31-length win in the Belmont Stakes is widely regarded as one of the greatest races in history.
Appearing on behalf of the star will be Kate Chenery Tweedy and Jocelyn Russell. Kate and Jocelyn will tell us about plans to bring a larger-than-life sculpture “Secretariat – Racing Into History” to the campus of Randolph Macon College and about efforts to make Ashland the center of this champion’s story. The bronze monument is soon to be trailered from a studio in Oklahoma to Ashland.
Kate Tweedy was an eyewitness to Big Red’s career. Kate is the daughter of Penny Chenery Tweedy who owned and managed Secretariat as well as Meadow Stables, his Caroline County birthplace. Kate will tell us about the deep connections between Ashland and Secretariat and the Chenery family, and about efforts to make Ashland the permanent home of the sculpture.
KATE TWEEDYAs the granddaughter of Chris Chenery, Kate was an eyewitness to Secretariat's spectacular career. Chris was Secretariat’s breeder and the owner of his birthplace, Meadow Stables in nearby Caroline County. Chenery was a long-time resident of Ashland and a graduate of Randolph Macon. Kate’s mother, Penny Chenery Tweedy, was a successful sportswoman and businesswoman who managed Secretariat and the farm after her father became ill. Kate chronicled her family’s story in an award-winning book entitled “Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend,” which to date has sold over 40,000 copies. Kate is one of the founding members of Secretariat For Virginia, whose mission is to support the funding and placement in Virginia of the “Secretariat - Racing Into History” bronze monument. JOCELYN RUSSELLJocelyn is an internationally acclaimed wildlife and equine artist from Washington State, who has sculpted everything from American elk to African elephants. Her statue of Sgt. She was commissioned to create the first “Secretariat – Racing Into History” monument that was unveiled in Lexington, Kentucky in 2019.
