Depending on who you listen to, Bitcoin is either “the biggest con in history” or “a tool for financial freedom, global inclusion, and the foundation for a future that empowers individuals.” James Murphy, our December speaker, will help you decide which one is more accurate.
James is a recognized national authority on the legal and regulatory aspects of Bitcoin. He will provide a brief tutorial on just what Bitcoin is, how it works, and will talk about its future. James currently shares his legal insights and analysis through public speaking engagements, features in publications like Forbes, and commentary to his 40,000+ followers on X.
He began his legal career in Los Angeles before coming to Richmond in 1992. In 2010, he founded Murphy & McGonigle, a law firm focused on serving the securities and banking industries. In 2017, the firm pivoted to represent emerging companies leveraging blockchain technology to disrupt traditional finance.
The shift proved successful, with clients including major U.S. crypto exchanges and blockchain infrastructure providers. The firm earned recognition as the “Law Firm of the Year” in Securities Regulation by U.S. News/Best Lawyers in America in 2021—an exceptional achievement for a firm just a decade old.
