On a recent tour of the James River led by Mike Ostrander, “Capt. Mike” was asked about his background and he described his career in one sentence, “I’m a fisherman with a fine arts degree.” Mike is a tour guide, fishing guide, historian, natural resources advocate, angler, and photographer.
He’s also the owner of Discover the James, one of Richmond’s best known tour companies. He leads a variety of educational and eco-friendly tours of the James River that showcase the river's wildlife, history, and natural wonders. The Bald Eagle Tour is the company’s most popular tour, taking riders through the territories of a half-dozen pairs of bald eagles that make the river their home. Mike knows the history, habits and even the love life of these majestic creatures.
Mike’s mission is to educate and enlighten others about the importance of preserving the James River. His efforts have earned him the "Steward of the James" award and recognition as a "River Hero" by the Friends of James River Park.
“It’s about people enjoying and sharing the incredible beauty and history of the river,” he says.
